China gasps at airy speech by grad student in US

China gasps at airy speech by grad student in USA young Chinese woman has drawn criticism on social media after unfavourably comparing her homeland's air and politics to those in the US during her graduation speech at an American university. Speaking at the University of Maryland, Yang Shuping said that coming to the United States had been a breath of "fresh air" after growing up in China. "The moment I inhaled and exhaled outside the airport, I felt free," she continued, drawing a parallel between China's notorious air pollution and its similarly choking restrictions on political speech.

South Korea fires at suspected drone at border with North amid missile crisis

South Korea fires at suspected drone at border with North amid missile crisisBy Ju-min Park and Christine Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang's latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China. The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North's test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nuclear-tipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets. The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea's lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions.

The Supreme Court Finds North Carolina's Racial Gerrymandering UnconstitutionalYou don’t see a Kagan-Breyer-Ginsburg-Sotomayor-Thomas majority often in U.S. Supreme Court decisions, but today that quintet joined together to deal a blow to North Carolina Republicans. In the decision in Cooper v. Harris, the eight-member pre-Gorsuch roster upheld a district court’s ruling that two congressional districts in North Carolina were unconstitutional racial gerrymanders, putting an end to one part of a six-year saga that began with redistricting in 2011.

Real-world 5G test is 120 times faster than home broadband – in a moving car

Real-world 5G test is 120 times faster than home broadband – in a moving carWe've heard so many times that companies are going to start testing 5G networks "soon" that it's actually surprising when a test really takes place. But don't let all noise around 5G diminish from a new test by Verizon and Ericsson, which achieved a 6.4Gbps connection in a car being driven around a racetrack. The test happened in a car so that it could be gratuitously pegged to the Indy 500 race next weekend. But conducting a speed test in a moving vehicle really is a significant real-world milestone. It's easy enough to get insane transmission speeds in a controlled lab environment, using a bunch of big antennas aimed at each other. But taking that connection out into the real world, and putting it on top of a moving target, is a very different proposition. The raw speed is the headline figure that demands attention here. 6.4Gbps is fast -- about 120 times faster than the average home broadband connection, which is about 50Mbps. It's whole orders of magnitude faster than you need to stream multiple 4K videos, so it's simply unnecessary for most people right now. More impressive is actually the latency, the time it takes for packets of data to travel to and from your device. A normal latency on a good 4G connection right now is about 50 milliseconds, which is fast enough for web browsing and video streaming, but makes high-speed tasks like online gaming more difficult. The trial 5G connection had an undisclosed "extremely low latency," likely in the single digits. It's fast enough that the human eyes can barely perceive a difference, which was demonstrated by blacking the car out, and driving around the course using a pair of virtual-reality goggles, fed a video stream over 5G. The 5G network is just a test for now, but the applications Verizon tried out here are likely to be important down the line. Autonomous cars and virtual reality are two of the best use cases for 5G right now, as both demand huge amounts of data with extremely low latency to work.

WHO meet refuses to admit Taiwan amid China pressureDespite impassioned pleas from several countries, the World Health Organization's annual assembly refused Monday to even discuss admitting Taiwan to the meeting, under pressure from China. Self-governing Taiwan, which China sees as a renegade province awaiting reunification, has been invited to attend the WHO's main annual meeting as an observer every year since 2009, but this year it did not receive an invitation. Relations with China have become increasingly frosty since Taiwan's Beijing-sceptic President Tsai Ing-wen took power almost a year ago and China has sought to block the island from a string of international events.

Everything points to Apple launching new MacBooks next month

Everything points to Apple launching new MacBooks next monthApple will unveil the next big thing for its various software operating systems at WWDC 2017, including iOS 11 and the next macOS major update. But the iPhone maker is also tipped to launch a variety of new products at the show, including the Siri speaker, a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and new MacBooks. A new report says that Apple is indeed expected to launch new laptops this quarter, and there’s reason to be excited. In a new research note to customers, TrendForce said that notebooks are having a little moment, again. Shipments for the first quarter of the year grew by 6.1% compared to last year, totaling around 37.81 million. That’s a 15.6% decline from the Christmas quarter, but still an impressive result for the period. Apple placed fifth in TrendForce's top, with 3.4 million MacBook laptops shipped during the period — that marks a 15.8% decline compared to the December quarter, but a 15.4% increase compared to last year. TrendForce quotes the MacBook Pro with TouchBar as the device that contributed significantly to the overall shipments. Similarly, the researchers believe the 12-inch MacBook will help Apple ship 10% more laptops in the second quarter of this year than last year. That’s because Apple reportedly plans to launch a new version of the 12-inch MacBook that will feature a new processor. The report notes that promotional pricing for some older models might also be in order. A previous report said that Apple will update the MacBook Pro as well, even if it only launched a new model in late 2016. TrendForce makes no mention of other MacBook updates for the quarter.

Elon Musk says a Model S will drive itself from New York to LA this year

Elon Musk says a Model S will drive itself from New York to LA this yearOne of the great things about Tesla is that its vehicles are beloved for a variety of different reasons. So while some Model S owners, for example, may point to raw acceleration as a key selling point, other owners might instead champion the car's safety profile or environmental friendliness. Many Model S and Model X owners, though, are particularly drawn to Tesla's Autopilot software, all the more so because it's constantly improving and evolving via convenient over-the-air software updates. While we're still a ways away from Level 5 autonomous driving becoming a practical reality, Tesla is doing all it can to hasten its arrival. In fact,  Elon Musk during a TED Talk last month said that Tesla later this year will demo a Model S drive itself from New York City to Los Angeles with no driver interaction whatsoever. "In November or December of this year,” Musk said, “we should be able to go all the way from a parking lot in California to a parking lot in New York with no controls touched in the entire journey." What's more, Musk said that the Model S used for the demo will not necessarily follow a fixed route. On the contrary, the Model S will be able to react to traffic congestion in real time and adjust its route accordingly. Now Musk is clearly no stranger to grandiose predictions, which is why some were quick to react to Musk's demo promise with some deserved skepticism. Nonetheless, it appears that Musk remains committed towards showing the world just how advanced Tesla's Autopilot has become with recent updates. After boasting about an upcoming Autopilot update with a "control algorithm [that] feels as smooth as silk", Musk fielded a question on Twitter about the aforementioned coast-to-coast demo. When asked if the demo was still on the horizon, Musk affirmed that it was. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/866482406160609280 Now a demo is obviously one thing, but when such a feature will become ready for the masses is another issue entirely. To this point, Musk during his TED Talk said that we're just about two years away from a time when Tesla owners will be able to go to sleep in their car and arrive at their destination.
